Praised for his rich, full singing and subtlety of stagecraft, DAVID STONEMAN is known for his work in both classic and modern opera. The California native has sung with the Boston Academy of Music, Cleveland Opera, Mobile Opera, Virginia Opera and Nevada Opera. Audiences have applauded his characterizations of Figaro and Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, the cantankerous Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, the ardent and boorish Madryka in Arabella, and in the title role of Rossini's arch comedy, Il turco in Italia.
DAVID STONEMAN first gained operatic experience at Chapman University's School of Music. He continued his training in California at the University of Southern California's esteemed College of Music, where, specializing in music of the Renaissance and Baroque, he earned a Master's Degree in music. Professional training followed with prestigious apprenticeships at Tanglewood and the Sarasota Opera, where, in addition to performing and covering leading roles, he was awarded the Richard F. Gold Memorial Scholarship by the Shoshana Foundation of New York.
After a successful debut at Nevada Opera in H.M.S. Pinafore, Mr. Stoneman was called back for both the season opening recital of opera selections and to sing the role of Germont in La traviata. These performances came between a return to Mobile Opera as Top in Aaron Copland's The Tender Land and Mr. Stoneman's first performances of Baron Scarpia in Tosca. His most recent work in Mobile was in the difficult double bill of Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio) and Carmina Burana.
Recent work at the Santa Barbara Opera has included Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Silvio in I pagliacci and Alidoro in La cenerentola.
In 1999 he was back in Boston at the Boston Academy of Music to reprise his role as John Wellington Wells in Gilbert & Sullivan's The Sorcerer. This marked Mr. Stoneman’s tenth year of working with that company where he has been heard in Linda di Chamounix, the American premiere of Arthur Sullivan's grand opera Ivanhoe, as Enrico in Anna Bolena, and as Selim in Il turco in Italia, a role which he reprised for the Cleveland Opera.
In Norfolk, Virginia he has sung in Handel’s Messiah with the Virginia Symphony, been heard as Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, and Achillas in Giulio Cesare, which is available on the Koch International Record label.
In New York City, Mr. Stoneman is recognized mostly for his work in contemporary opera, having worked with groups like the American Chamber Opera, the Downtown Symphony, Regina Opera, and in the Bronx Opera's New York premiere of Kirk Mechem's Tartuffe. With American Opera Projects he performed in the world premiere of Memoirs of Uliana Rooney by Vivian Fine, in New York's Bryant Park. That production was encored in Philadelphia. At the renowned American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts he took part in the world premiere of The Juniper Tree by Philip Glass and Robert Moran which is soon to be released on Mr. Glass' own record label.
Locally, Mr. Stoneman is proud to have more upcoming performances with the Long Beach Chorale, the Orange Coast College Chorale, and as part of the educational efforts of the Pacific Symphony in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.
